the shine project

Hi!!
So on Tuesday my friend Kari invited me to go do a service project, aka make blankets for homeless youths. ps I could NOT get this Schmidt clip out of my head all night. Just couldn't. Anyways, The Shine Project put together this cool event where the owner, Ashley, & an inspirational speaker, Al Fox spoke and stuff while a bunch of people like myself made blankets.

We made fleece tie blankets (I don't know what they're really called so they're officially called tied blankets) and if the youth who gets mine ever reads this, I'M SORRY, ok? My tied blanket looked like it was possibly made by someone with no hands. Or eyes. But it will keep someone warm this winter and that's all that matters! It was REALLY cool to meet Ashley because she is the ultimate girl boss who made her dreams become a reality AND helps sooo many people by doing what she does! She employs 1st generation college students to help them realize their potential and to help them earn money to pay for college. SO COOL. It was a really neat experience because you never really think too much about how something so small like a blanket will really help someone keep warm this winter.

I was so mad that I forgot my camera at home (come on, Candace!) so these grainy iphone pictures are all I got, sorry people. But memories you guys, those are what I'm trying to capture here! Also the last picture is completely unrelated, just snapped a Jason + Candace picture when I got home and wasn't about to NOT share it.

So Jason and I are driving to Utah AS WE SPEAK. Let's be honest though, I'm probably sleeping or eating snacks while Jason is driving. Love you J! Also, s/o to bloggers scheduled posts feature for making this post possible right now.  Wish us luck on this 9ish hour drive to Utah for the weekend! If you have any fun car games, you better send them my way because I'll need something to do while I'm not snoozing ;)

  2. Such a sweet thing for you to do! Sorry, no ideas for car games. All I do is sing my heart out like the car is my personal studio and that usually keeps things exciting! lol

  3. Not surprised your a New Girls fan! Love you. But that's really sweet you made a blanket...I need to get involved in something more than my own selfish life. I made a few of those blankets in high school and they are no joke. I made one for a BF in like 10th grade and one side was a solid color and the other side was like football pattern and only by the time it was done did I notice that the football pattern was inside out. So it was like blurry footballs, hahaha. Whatever. I'm SURE he still has it. Just kidding. Anywho. Have fun on your 9 hour drive?! I hate long car rides. After like 4 hours I start clawing at the windows, I start to get crazy and feel like literally I am dying. One time on our drive from MI to NE (12 hours) I started crying uncontrollably that I couldn't do it anymore. And I wasn't even driving hahaha. But it's usually fun up until that point lol..

    1. hahah I LOVE New Girl, so freaking funny. So my friend invited me to go and I wasn't thrilled about it (Jason and I have a joke where I try to avoid any type of service possible ;) ) but it was really cool and super easy to make the blankets! K that is soooo funny you made one and the patter was inside out hahaha ours were only 1 piece of fabric but guaranteed I would have done the SAME thing had it been 2 pieces of fabric. seriously the drive up wasn't bad but the drive home was wretched (as you saw in my post today) xo

  5. Thats so awesome that you made a blanket for someone else to use this winter. I made one of those blankets once when I was in high school and it was a lot harder than I thought it would be, its tough keeping it lined up and even. Have fun this weekend in Utah!!

  6. See, everyone says tie blankets are so easy, but I've always known they were lying! Haha, what a fun/great service project to do! Someone will be nice and warm because of your tying, and that's what matters.

  24. I love that you did this! I did this with the teens I used to mentor a couple of years ago (not through a program - just something one of my girls really felt led to do). It's amazing how just a little bit of your time can bless someone else in such a huge way!
